School district to pay $4.5 million for anti-Semitic bullying

An upstate New York school district that failed to prevent bullying of Jewish students has agreed to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit filed in 2012 for $4.48 million, which means each of the five plaintiffs will get $600,000 after attorney fees. The students were subjected to slurs, Nazi salutes, Holocaust “jokes,” and physical intimidation. The district also agreed to provide mandatory training to teachers and staff so it doesn’t happen again. (Read the story here and the district’s official statement here.)
