Harrison Butker (photo below) is an NFL kicker who made controversial remarks about women at a private Catholic college graduation ceremony, and recently he doubled down on those remarks.
“I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolic lies told to you,” Butker said. “Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.”
(See story here.) Clearly, he thinks a woman’s place is in the home. It sounds like his wife is delighted to be a homemaker. That’s fine for her, and more power to both of them. They’ve found what works for them.
But she has a husband with a job that pays a base salary of $4,437,500 a year, which incentives could bring up to $6,400,000 a year (see story here). Few women have that; most women, even those with families, have to work to help support their families.
Butker’s notion of how women should live their lives is fine as a personal choice, but it’s awfully judgmental to expect it of the millions of American women who work from necessity, not choice. There’s also no room in his thinking, or his heart, for LGBQT people.
Butker deservedly is catching flak for being intolerant. He doesn’t understand the diversity of our society, or that this country is big enough for everyone, including those different from him. He sees only one way of living, and would force everyone into it. That’s dead wrong.
