Biden and the sandbag

Republicans want you to believe Biden is too old for another term.

That’s doubtful, but even if true, isn’t a good enough reason to elect any Republican presently in the field.

Amusingly, Republicans who question Biden’s mental faculties are complaining he outsmarted them in debt ceiling negotiations. (If he’s feeble, what does that make them?)

Putin has reason to complain, too, because Biden has outmaneuvered him by rallying NATO and Europe against his invasion of Ukraine.

Biden also has gotten important legislation through a difficult Congress, including his infrastructure bill, some climate initiatives, and the first gun legislation in years (see story here).

With his half-century of Washington D.C. experience as a senator and vice president, nobody is savvier or better schooled in congressional politics and foreign policy than he is. Don’t believe the naysayers like Nikki Haley who insinuate he can’t pass a mental competency test. (He’s waaayyy smarter than her.)

But they’ll seize on any opportunity to argue his age is a problem. Wait for it, here it comes.

Biden tripped over a sandbag and fell onstage at Air Force Academy graduation ceremonies on Thursday, June 1, 2023 (story here). The sandbag is plainly visible in the photo above and video below. It was being used to anchor the teleprompter.

His age had nothing to do with it. Presidents don’t normally look down at their feet when walking onstage. You don’t normally watch your feet when walking; I wasn’t looking down when I tripped over a sandbag in Vietnam and broke several bones in my foot. People of all ages and mental capacities trip over objects and fall down. It means nothing.

Any thinking voter will, instead, look at the challenges facing our country and evaluate who can best manage them. Just a reminder: FDR couldn’t walk at all, but he got us through the Great Depression and World War 2. If Republicans don’t have a better argument for replacing Biden than this, that’s a pretty good argument for re-electing him.
