Technology: Lightning in a bottle

Modern technology is making a lot of age-old dreams come true (e.g., we can now make diamonds and gold), and while no one has figured out how to plug a cord into lightning, scientists are getting closer to making their own clouds and pulling electricity from them.

Electricity from thin air — how does it work? A cloud is water droplets, and each droplet has an electrical charge. Researchers figured out how to strip it from water molecules by passing them through nanopores. Read the details here.

Still a ways from commercialization, but one more potential coffin nail in fossil fuels. If you still can’t visualize an oil-free future civilization, you don’t have much imagination.

Picture below: The basic idea is right, but the technique needs a little refining.
