Innocent travelers don’t stash guns in peanut butter jars

A passenger tried to sneak a gun through security at New York’s JFK airport by stashing its parts (and ammo) in peanut butter jars.

He was caught (see story here). Neither the man, who is from Rhode Island, nor the airline, or his destination, were identified. All the story says is he could be fined “up to $15,000.” No jail time, nor do-not-fly list.

Republicans want no legal restrictions on guns, and we can’t count on common sense. Our society is awash in guns, and gun violence is a national epidemic.

Crack down on crime instead, they argue. That’s fine with me, I’m not a fan of bad guys, and have little sympathy for complaints about prison food. Federal authorities and airlines should send a stern message that sneaking guns onto planes has serious consequences.

This guy obviously didn’t just forget there was a gun in his luggage. He was up to no good. Instead of fining people like him, why not a mandatory minimum of 2 years behind bars followed by a 10-year suspension of flying privileges? That might make the next guy think twice.
