Biden will be impeached, so why is he smiling?

The GOP is still expected to narrowly win House control, and the smaller their ever-shrinking margin, the more likely Biden will be impeached.

That’s because Kevin McCarthy will need GOP extremists’ votes to become speaker, and that’s the price they’ll exact (see story here).

Biden’s “come and get it” grin is easy to explain. The House action will meet sudden death in the Democratic-controlled Senate; there’ll be no trial, witnesses, or opportunity for grandstanding.

And the midterms showed, “Every time they’re reminded that the GOP is controlled by a bunch of conspiracy theory-addled jackasses who worship Donald Trump, voters show up and pull the lever for Democrats, even when they don’t feel all that great about the Democrats either.”

Stated slightly differently, “their plan for power, after an election in which they nearly screwed the pooch, is to use that power to remind ordinary Americans of all the reasons they hate Republicans.”

At the risk of sounding cloying,

“One would think that, after a midterm election in which GOP candidates lost dozens of offices they otherwise would have won, the momentum for impeaching Biden would slow down. Most voters hate Republican extremism and they especially hate Trump’s childish tantrums, the largest single factor fueling the pressure to impeach Biden.”

That won’t stop them, because they can’t help themselves. Most Americans outside Trump’s base of true believers will see it as payback for Trump’s impeachments, which it is. Marjorie Taylor Greene will dance with glee. But to the broader public, “It will serve as a stark reminder that the Republicans are controlled by the worst people in the country.”

The Clinton impeachment ended Speaker Newt Gingrich’s political career. Speaker-aspirant Kevin McCarthy knows this. He also “knows full well that it’s a losing proposition to impeach Biden,” but with only a 3 or 4 vote House majority, he’ll have to “allow the right-wing zealots to push him right off that cliff.”

And Biden will cruise to re-election, with more comfortable House and Senate majorities in his second term.
