Putin’s faux outrage

“Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday called the attack that damaged the huge bridge connecting Russia to its annexed territory of Crimea ‘a terrorist act’ masterminded by Ukrainian special services,” Huffington Post reported on October 9, 2022 (read story here).

Terrorism? Really? Assuming Ukraine, a country Russia invaded, blew up Putin’s bridge — wouldn’t that be a military target of a government defending its own soil against an invader? After all, the bridge is used to supply Russian terrorists murdering Ukrainian men, women, and children.

“There’s no doubt it was a terrorist act directed at the destruction of critically important civilian infrastructure of the Russian Federation,” Putin said. I’m not so sure.

Ukrainian forces didn’t cause the fire in Afghanistan’s Russian-built Salang tunnel on November 3, 1982, and it’s not even certain that Afghans defending their country against Russian invasion did, either.

Russians are perfectly capable of blowing themselves up.

For the record, the Ukrainian government said, “Putin accuses Ukraine of terrorism? It has not even been 24 hours since Russian planes fired 12 rockets into a residential area of Zaporizhzhia, killing 13 people and injuring more than 50. No, there is only one state terrorist and the whole world knows who he is,” which isn’t exactly denying wrecking the bridge and blocking Putin’s supply line, it’s only a repudiation of Putin’s word choice.

But whatever anyone chooses to call it, Putin asked for it, and let’s hope for more of the same.
