Colorado primary: Boebert wins, rogue county clerk loses and whines

Flamboyant Rep. Lauren Boebert was virtually assured of returning to Congress for the 2023-2025 term after handily winning the Republican primary. She crushed her challenger by a 2-to-1 margin, and there’s little chance the deep-red district in western Colorado will elect the Democrat in November.

But the story was very different for Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, who together with her top deputy has been indicted for election-related crimes, and held in contempt of court. Peters was seeking the GOP nomination for Colorado secretary of state, the state’s top election officer.

Both races have been called by news media, but Peters has declared “it’s not over” and refused to concede, even though she trails the winner by more than 80,000 votes (see that story here).

Peters has been barred by the court from working on elections in her own county and office. I previously wrote about her here (5/11/22), here (3/9/22), here (2/15/22), and here (8/13/21).

She got about 28% of the votes in a 3-way race against two more respectable candidates, but the primary contest wasn’t close, there was a clear winner in that race by a candidate who got over 40% of the total. That candidate will face off against Jena Griswold, who was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

It’s a relief this deranged woman won’t advance to the general election in what might be a red-wave year. Even so, Peters got nearly 150,000 votes of about half a million cast in the GOP primary, which makes you wonder about the judgment of Mesa County’s Republican voters.

As for Boebert’s easy win, I recommend driving around western Colorado, not through it, because of the odd people there. This isn’t about Republican vs. Democrat; I get that it’s a rural-small town, conservative area. It’s about crazy vs. sane, and voters went for the nutjob by a wide margin, so I don’t think it’s a safe place for normal people to be.
