Capitol rioter pleadings and sentencings on 6/17/22

Couy Griffin, a New Mexico county commissioner who embraces false election conspiracy theories, threatened to return with guns for Biden’s inauguration, and is currently defying a court order to certify his county’s 2022 primary election returns, was sentenced to time served, fined, put on probation, and ordered to perform community service for his role in the Capitol riot. Story here.
Mark Mazza, 57, of Indiana pleaded guilty to “extremely serious” charges of carrying a loaded gun to the Capitol, which he lost during the melee and then falsely reported stolen, and assaulting police during the riot; he also insinuated he would’ve killed Speaker Nancy Pelosi if he’d found her. He faces up to 25 years in prison when he’s sentenced in September 2022. Story here.
Thomas Baranyi, 29, a New Jersey resident who gained notoriety for displaying rioter Ashli Babbitt’s blood on his hands to TV cameras on Jan. 6, was sentenced to 90 days in prison for his participation in what prosecutors called “a violent wave of Capitol attackers” and making “dangerous statements afterwards.” Story here.
Lawrence Earl Stackhouse III, 33, a New Jersey sheet metal worker who hoped to join the Proud Boys, was sentenced to 2 weeks in jail, 3 months of house arrest, probation, and restitution for illegally entering the Capitol during the riot. He also “lost jobs with government contractors like Boeing and Lockheed Martin after his arrest.” Story here.
Ryan Kelley, who’s running for Michigan governor, was denied a request to possess firearms while awaiting trial on Capitol riot charges. His lawyer argued he needs the gun while he campaigns because he doesn’t have security staff. Story here.
