Ginni Thomas’ selfie

“Never before in our nation’s history have our elections been so threatened by fraud and unconstitutional procedures,” Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas, wrote in a Dec. 13, 2020, email.

She was right about that, but was talking about Trump and herself, although you’ll never get her to admit that.

This comment was embedded in an email she sent to 27 Arizona legislators and 2 state officials asking them to ignore the votes of 1,672,143 Arizonans and award the state’s 11 electoral votes to Trump, even though he lost the state, insisting they could — and should — do that because those votes were tainted by “fraud.”

They were not. Even a multimillion-dollar unofficial “audit” commissioned by Arizona’s GOP legislature (partly at taxpayer expense) and conducted by a company run by a guy very active in promoting Trump’s election lies, and widely derided as a sham, found no fraud and confirmed the results.

As for what she meant by “unconstitutional,” that’s anybody’s guess; but an educated guess is that, like Trump and many other Republicans, she probably considered mail-in votes illegitimate. Except their own, of course. Trump voted by mail in 2020.

Thomas isn’t a public official. As a private citizen, she can hold any views she likes. She can believe in UFOs and little green martians if she wants to.

Her actual beliefs aren’t far off from that. She’s a rightwing activist involved in groups fighting against “liberal tyranny.” She was directly involved in efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and has emerged as one of the more toxic figures in Washington D.C. close to Trump who lobbied and plotted for what amounted to a coup and the overthrow of our democracy.

In short, Justice Thomas’s wife is a seditionist and subversive.

The Hill says (here), “Thomas’s involvement in working to overturn the results in the presidential election has raised ethical questions over Clarence Thomas, who has taken part in rulings on cases related to the election.” (He has refused urging to recuse himself from those cases.) “Clarence Thomas has rejected suggestions of a conflict of interest, arguing his and his wife’s careers are entirely separate.”

The justice claims they don’t discuss the election at home. While that seems ludicrous to many, they don’t really need to, because on that subject they probably think exactly alike. Of all the Supreme Court justices, none is more hostile to the right to vote, and your most basic rights as a citizen, than he.
