What’s wrong with “stop the count”

The video below shows a scene in Detroit after the 2020 election. At the time, Trump was leading the initial tally in Michigan, so his supporters wanted election officials to stop counting votes. Their demonstration at the election office was disruptive and implicitly violent.

They were asking for a violation of election laws, which require counting all legal ballots. They were demanding the state violate the civil rights of voters whose ballots hadn’t been counted yet. Acceding to their demands would have violated those voters’ constitutional right to equal protection under the laws.

In short, what they demanded was unlawful, unconstitutional, and wrong. If we are to keep our democracy, those responsible for managing our elections must never give in to people like these, and should be given the police protection that was inadequate or lacking in this instance.
