Republicans make stupidity a sport

Republicans lie a lot, we all know that. Lately, they’re into fantasy, too.

This isn’t new. “Chinese bamboo ballots” are a fantasy. “Stop the Steal” exists only in overheated imaginations. And QAnon lives in Never-Never Land.

The GOP recently announced it won’t participate in 2024 presidential debates. This is no loss. They long ago ceased offering any resemblance of coherent debate or discussion of public issues.

Nowadays, listening to Republicans is a spectator sport. Without intending to be, they’re stand-up comedians. We should play along and score them.

So here’s today’s “good one.” Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), elevated to GOP House conference chair last year, knows who’s responsible for the baby formula shortage: “Pedo grifters.” (For the real reasons, go here.) I don’t know who Charles T. Barreca is, but he nailed the reply. On a scale of 0-10, I give her a “0” (not funny at all) and him a “10” (side-splitting hilarious).

It’s hard to be stupid and funny at the same time, and they’re no good at it. But it plays well with their stupid followers, which is why they embarrass themselves so.

Update: Stefanik’s staff is now trying to pretend she said something else. See story here. Unfortunately for her, captured screenshots can’t be made to go away.
