Is Putin planning to blow himself up?

Ahead of Russia’s Victory Day, which that country celebrates with a giant military parade on May 9 of every year to commemorate Nazi Germany’s surrender, it was thought that Putin would declare victory in the besieged city of Mariupol, declare war against Ukraine (upgrading the current “special military operation”), announce a military mobilization and/or callup of reserves, or issue new nuclear threats against the West and NATO.

He did none of those things. He compared Ukraine to the Nazis, and claimed Russian troops are “defending the motherland,” but those are old talking points.

The most interesting thing he said was this: His troops are fighting so “no one forgets the lessons of World War Two,” and battling so “there is no place for executioners, punishers and Nazis in the world.” (See story here.)

He’s talking about himself.

His troops are behaving like the Nazis who invaded Russia in 1941. They’re raping, looting and burning, leveling villages, kidnapping and murdering civilians, and leaving a scorched earth behind them; they’re bombing hospitals and schools. In short, they’re “executioners, punishers, and Nazis.”

And he’s responsible for it. So the question is, to rid the world of this evilness, is he planning to blow himself up?

(Note: If I published this in Russia, I’d get 15 years in the slammer. Or maybe shot.)
