McConnell waffles on GOP accused wife-beater

GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell either can’t decide, or doesn’t want to say, whether a Republican candidate accused of physically abusing his wife and children should drop out of Missouri’s 2022 Senate race.

“Well look I think all of the developments of the last 24 hours are things the people of Missouri are going to take into account both the primary and I would assume would take into account in the general,” deadpanned McConnell, who is often called “The Turtle” because his countenance resembles a turtle’s (see photos below) and his politics are reptilian.

The subject of concern is Eric Greitens, who resigned as Missouri governor after little over a year in office, because of recurring scandals. More recently, his estranged wife has alleged in court documents that he “bought a gun, hid it from his family and threatened to kill himself if [she] did not provide ‘specific public political support’ prior to his 2018 resignation,” and also “grew physically violent with her and her children.”

The Hill says (here) her allegations “have sent off alarm bells among national Republicans and sparked calls from Greitens’s primary challengers for him” to drop out of the race, which so far he’s refused to do. And so far, this accused wife-beater appears to remain popular with Missouri Republican voters, according to that latest polls posted on RealClearPolitics as of Tuesday, March 22, 2022.

But my posting here is about McConnell, not Greitens. Specifically, that McConnell has no principles and calculates everything within a framework of political advantage. He’s who Kentucky voters sent to the Senate to represent them, and the rest of us can’t do anything about that. He’s who the Senate’s 50 Republicans chose to preside over their caucus, and we can’t do anything about that, either.

All we can do is express our disgust with their party and its leaders by refusing to vote for Republicans in our local and state elections.
