Police killed 1,055 people in 2021

There’s no official tracking of police shootings in the U.S., but the Washington Post makes an effort to collect and compile data. In case you’re interested, here are their numbers, as reported by Daily Mail (here):

  • Police fatally shot 1,055 people in 2021, up from 1,021 in 2020.
  • Of these, 234 were identified as white, 139 as black, and 66 as Hispanic.
  • 996 were male and 56 female.
  • 786 were armed, 632 with a gun, 154 with a knife, while 35 had a “toy weapon.”
  • 17 were minors, and about half were 30-44 years old.
  • California had the most fatal police shootings with 141, Texas was second with 95, and Georgia was third with 51.
