Notorious Capitol rioter now accused of fatal DUI crash

Emily Hernandez, 22, a Capitol rioter who gleefully brandished a sign stolen from Speaker Pelosi’s office (photo), now she faces serious criminal charges in her home state after a wrong-way crash on a Missouri interstate highway.

The crash occurred around 7 p.m. Wednesday night, January 5, 2022, on I-44 near Hernandez’s home in Sullivan, Franklin County. A 32-year-old mother of two was killed, and her husband seriously injured, in the collision.

Hernandez, who allegedly was drunk, suffered what her lawyer described as “a serious head injury” and was taken to a hospital but released the next day. She had planned to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges stemming from the Capitol riot next week, but that now appears to be on hold.

If there’s an editorial comment to be made here, it’s that people who don’t respect your vote not surprisingly don’t have much regard for other peoples’ lives and well-being, either, but we should wait to see how the new charges against her play out in the courts. Meanwhile, she’s presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law.
