“Sen. Susan Collins, the moderate Republican from Maine, favors passing legislation to enshrine the protections of Roe v. Wade into law,” NBC News reported on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 (here), as the Supreme Court listens to oral arguments in a Mississippi case challenging Roe v. Wade.
Collins’ vote put Brett Kavanaugh, who opposes abortion rights, on the Supreme Court. At the time, she said she didn’t believe he would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, according to Wikipedia (here). And by voting for him, she implicitly rejected the testimony of Christine Blasey Ford, who claimed Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her.
Now her office says, “Senator Collins supports the right to an abortion and believes that the protections in the Roe and Casey decisions should be passed into law. She has had some conversations with her colleagues about this and is open to further discussions.” Collins knows perfectly well such legislation won’t pass in the Senate unless the filibuster is abolished, which she opposes.
Here’s a woman who refused to defend abortion rights when she had the chance, or stand up for a sexual assault victim, who now says she’ll support legislation to protect those rights that she knows has no chance of passing.
Seattle is a long way from Maine, but even from here the hypocrisy of this infamous waffler (video below) reeks like dead fish washed up on a beach.
