Why are cranberry can labels upside down?

Surely you’ve noticed. I have. Well, mystery solved.

There’s always a reason for everything. It keeps the jelly whole, and creates an air bubble on the bottom side, so the cranberry “log” will slide out when you open the can from the top.

Of course, if you can’t get cranberry sauce this Thanksgiving holiday — CNN reports only 79% availability “across national retailers” — you’re probably not thinking about that as you dive into applesauce or whatever your substitute is.
