The stupid things journalists write

“The Perseverance rover took a well-deserved break in October during solar conjunction, but it’s back to investigating intriguing rocks in Jezero Crater on Mars,” CNN correspondent Ashley Strickland wrote in an article posted on Thursday, November 11, 2021.

Or, out of an abundance of fairness to her, maybe just maybe a copyeditor dressed up her reporting — if anybody can still afford copyeditors. (Doesn’t look like it, judging from the number of typos and grammatical errors I find in the daily news.)

See this grave offense against English composition and comprehension for yourself, right here.

The Perseverance Mars rover is a machine. It doesn’t get tired, and doesn’t need breaks. And, as Clint Eastwood might say, “deserve’s got nothing to do with it.”
