PHOTOGRAPHY: Nice house

This is Wheatland, the former home of James Buchanan in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a town known for lousy presidents and lying cops.

Buchanan, usually ranked as America’s worst president (although he has competition), is often blamed for the Civil War.

He deserves to be, although he isn’t alone. Others had their fingers in that pie, too. He also deserves to be reviled for being pro-slavery, which he was.

I can see preserving the house, because it’s a nice house. (Buchanan was a rich lawyer before he became a lousy president).

I can also see dropping a big stone on top of his grave to keep squirrels from digging him up.

But building a monument to mark his birthplace? What on earth for?
