Why we still need TSA

Not to protect us from Osama bin Laden — he’s dead — but from each other.

TSA agents have confiscated nearly 4,500 guns at U.S. airports in the first 9 months of 2021; for a list of the 10 airports with the most gun confiscations, go here.

Why would anyone go to an airport with a gun in their baggage? Don’t they realize baggage is screened? And guns aren’t allowed on planes? Take a gun to an airport, goodbye gun. You probably won’t be on your flight, either.

So why do thousands of people do it anyway? Maybe they feel they need protection against their fellow passengers?

11 guns per million passengers in a nation where there is a gun for every American. This is not really a justification for the TSA. The federal government has been seizing guns at airports for decades. And few crimes on planes or at airports involve firearms. Millions of new guns were sold this year and this accounts for a very small percentage of those sales. Also the 911 hijackers didn’t use guns just box cutters. The TSA also seizes an even greater number of knives out of baggage or from people going through security, mostly pen knives. [Edited comment.]

So you think 4,495 guns seized from passengers isn’t enough to justify airport security? As for knives, TSA apparently tallies them in “tons,” not numbers, and even finds explosives like C4 in passenger baggage. Still want to ride on a plane without TSA screening?
