How to handle bear encounters

If you encounter a bear, do you know what to do?

Don’t feel bad, neither do I. And, unfortunately, it’s complicated. But common sense counts for a lot.

“Don’t feed the bears.” Never. And don’t leave food where they can get it, either.

If you find yourself face-to-face with a bear, rule #1, don’t run. They can easily outrun you. Rule #2, don’t climb a tree. They can climb much better than you.

Here’s a primer on what to do — and not do. (Click here for primer.)

Bear spray? Yep, but learn how to use it, before you need to.

Loud noises, clapping, talking? Yep, to keep them away.

Hike in groups. Leave little kids and dogs at home.

They’re more afraid of you than them.

Attacks are rare. Don’t invite one.
