Police testify about Capitol riot; Republicans turn their backs

“Senate Republicans waved off police officers’ emotional accounts Tuesday of battling a violent mob of Donald Trump supporters at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 as a partisan escapade not worth paying attention to,” Huffington Post said on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 (read story here), with Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) calling it “partisan pageantry.”

“The four officers who testified … described vicious attacks, racial epithets and fearing for their lives as they attempted to prevent hundreds of rioters from breaching the Capitol,” Huffington Post reported, adding, “But Republican senators seemed uninterested in the hearing.”

Senate Republicans used their filibuster power to block creation of an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the mob attack on the Capitol, in which more than 100 police officers were injured. Now, they’re literally saying those officers are “not worth paying attention to.” That was too much even for a Fox host, who called their stories “compelling” (read story here).

An NBC News headline asked, “If GOP won’t defend the Capitol, the Constitution or themselves, what do they stand for?” (Read that story here.) Isn’t the answer obvious? Trump. And Trump’s “Big Lie” about a “stolen” election. And the mob.

These police officers should be asked why they did not use deadly force to protect the Capitol. They failed at their job. Yes there should have been a blood bath on the Capitol steps, especially if there was an insurrection, and no protester should have breached the line alive. [Edited comment.]
