Increased funding for Capitol security barely passes in House

“A $1.9 billion emergency funding bill to boost security at the US Capitol in the wake of the January 6 insurrection barely passed the House on Thursday,” May 20, 2021, Vox reported (see story here). The vote was 213-212 after House Speaker Pelosi took charge of negotiations.

“The measure, which would also provide additional personal security for lawmakers facing an intensifying wave of threats and harassment in Washington and their home districts, received no Republican support, and exposed fissures within the Democratic Party over the issue of increasing funding for any police force,” Vox said.

Republicans, who’ve downplayed the Capitol riot to the point of pretending it didn’t happen, complained “it cost too much money.” It’s about 1/1000th of the tax cuts they gave rich people 4 years ago. Also, some of them provide their own security.

Some progressive Democrats voted against the bill because it wasn’t coupled to police reforms. And to warn Democratic leaders not to take their votes for granted.
