Scientists have figured out how LSD works, and Aldous Huxley nailed it when he wrote in 1954 that “psychedelic lowers the efficiency of the brain as an instrument for focusing the mind on the problems of life.”

While Huxley was writing about mescaline, LSD works similarly, and The Guardian describes what researchers found out as follows: “LSD … lowers the barriers that constrain people’s thoughts … [and] frees the mind to wander more easily and experience the world anew.”

“Normally, our thoughts and incoming information are filtered by our prior experience,” one of the researchers said. “But if you take that filtering and suppression away, you … get a totally new perspective.”
