Georgia GOP legislators outlaw “Pizza to the Polls”

Feed voters, go to jail.

Georgia Republican legislators have just passed a law making it a felony to give coffee or food to voters waiting in line. Read story here.

During the 2020 election, some voters waited in lines for hours. Republicans made it as hard to vote as they possibly could, and if they can make voting even more difficult and uncomfortable, they will. What next, ban sweaters and scarves to make them freeze to death?

In 2020, “Pizza to the Polls” distributed 69,839 pizzas to 3,284 polling places in 48 states, according to their website here. Other organizations, such as Chefs for the Polls, also distributed food to voters waiting in lines. Read about that here.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this. It’s nonpartisan. They don’t ask who the voters intend to vote for, or try to influence how they vote. What apparently offends these Republicans is it might affect whether they vote.

Chances are, the person delivering the pizzas is a worker at a local pizzeria. Are you going to throw her in prison for doing her job? The GOP’s answer to that apparently is, yes.

Enough already. Congress must protect voters and food workers alike from this tyranny. If that requires abolishing the filibuster, then the filibuster must go. Republican attacks on the right to vote have reached the point of being intolerable.

Here in Washington I can’t even get food in line at the polling place because there are no lines. [This comment has been edited.]

That’s because there are no polling places. Washington is all-mail voting.
