Crime news: Canadian car attacker found guilty

Alek Minassian

A Canadian man who drove a rented van on a crowded Toronto sidewalk in 2018, mowing down pedestrians, is criminally responsible for his actions despite suffering from autism spectrum disorder, a judge ruled on Wednesday, February 3, 2021.

She found him guilty of 10 counts of murder, for the people who died, and 16 counts of attempted murder. That means he’ll spend the rest of his life in prison; Canada doesn’t have a death penalty.

Defendant Alek Minassian’s lawyer argued his disorder prevented him from knowing it was wrong, but the judge disagreed, saying he planned the crime with a functioning, rational brain.

Minassian, who was 25 at the time, told police he wanted to punish society because women wouldn’t have sex with him. Maybe he’ll get a sex life in prison, just not the one he wanted.

This is just the trial court. Canada has an appeals court, and Supreme Court. Itis a little premature to suggest he will spend the rest of his life in prison. and there is parole in Canada. He has been found guilty though.

It’s safe to say he’ll never be released. Appealing the judge’s rejection of his insanity defense will go nowhere, and no parole board will accept the responsibility of releasing a mass murderer back into society.
