Democrats start figuring out why they lost House seats

At the same time, they’re searching for a leader of their 2022 campaign efforts.

It’s generally agreed that Democrats misread the electorate. They also “faced a constant volley of false charges coming from the President himself: that Democrats were at the ready to end funding for police, planning to come after guns, welcome unchecked immigrants into the country illegally, and scrap private health insurance plans. Democrats tried to ignore the noise, but the charges stuck,” Time magazine says (read article here).

Messaging obviously is crucial; it’s clear that millions of Americans believe things that aren’t true. Money is important, too, because it takes cash to get the message out. Democrats also face another headwind in the 2022 midterms: With no Trump to motivate Democratic-leaning voters to go to the polls, a weak turnout likely would favor Republicans. On top of that, Republicans hold the advantage in the redistricting that will result from the 2020 census.

The respected blog FiveThirtyEight, run by statisticians who focus on polling data, says “Republicans are well-positioned to take the House in 2022” (read article here), so Democrats will have to do a lot of things right to hold onto their House majority beyond President-elect Biden’s first two years.

From a political scientists point of view it is puzzling. Did the losing Presidential Candidate have coattails? If so then it does suggest Donald Trump should have won reelection. That there was wide spread election shenanigans.

It could mean votes were there against Trump, but not necessarily for Joe Biden. Any Bob or Joe and maybe Hilliary and especially Bernie could have won against Trump.

It could mean the Republicans found a group of passionate, thoughtful, charismatic candidates who will make America Great Again for many decades. We will have an American renaissance. I plan to be there with the large nudists in the park under magnificent skies and the stars and bars sipping my fantastic Washington wine.

Come join the Meadow party remember we are jus weird and bizarre just like America. Dandelion break! That will freak out and puzzle the experts.

It’s not hard to figure out. Most of the House seats Democrats lost this year were red seats they flipped blue in 2018. Nearly all of them are in suburbs. Nearly all of the candidates who won them back for the GOP are women. America is a center-right country, and the voters rejected Trump, but didn’t embrace the progressive left. Also, there are plenty of voters who prefer split government, with neither party in total control.
