What’s behind the mink genocide

“Denmark’s fur farms are home to 17 million minks, and last week, the government announced it would kill all of them.”

“At least a million minks have already been culled by gassing in the Netherlands and Spain.”

The reason? The virus that causes Covid-19 “had moved from humans to minks,” mutated in the minks, then moved “back to humans” in a form “of a new strain … that our vaccines would be ineffective against.”

Of course, this threat to human safety wouldn’t exist at all if profit-seeking people didn’t farm mink because vainglorious people want to wear mink fur.

“When minks are bred for their pelts — which are used to make fur coats and accessories — they are confined in small cages for their entire lives. They cannot engage in natural behaviors like roaming territories, digging, or swimming. Getty Images”

Minks also exist in the wild which could become a pool for the disease. Guess mink coats will be cheap next year.

Wild minks aren’t exposed to human carriers of Covid-19, but if farmed minks escaped into the wild, they could spread it to the wild population.
