I never thought I’d write a headline like that. After all, this is America. Or was until a totalitarian movement led by a charlatan took over one of our major political parties. We’re about to hold an election, and many Americans are worried that if Trump loses but refuses to cede power, and his party backs him, America could become a dictatorship. Trump can’t subvert our democracy by himself, of course. He would need the help of many people. But the GOP has shown itself, in many ways, to be an anti-democracy party. The question is how far they will go in that direction. The answer, so far, is they’ve already gone disturbingly far. And that’s what has so many of us so worried.
