Derek Chauvin is released on bail

Derek Chauvin, the fired Minneapolis cop charged with murder for choking George Floyd to death while Floyd lay handcuffed on the pavement, was released from jail on Wednesday, October 7, 2020, after posting $1 million bail.

News reports say Chauvin posted a bail bond. The bond (here) doesn’t show how much was paid, or who paid it, but bondsmen typically charge 10% of the bond’s face value, or $100,000 in this case, which is nonrefundable if the defendant appears in court. If he doesn’t, the bond company forfeits the entire $1 million.

Chauvin is the last of 4 cops facing charges for Floyd’s death to be released from custody.
