Murder charges in Texas white cop’s killing of black man

Johnathan Price, 31, a popular former college football player and a city employee in Wolfe City, Texas, was killed by Shaun Lucas, 22, on Saturday, October 3, 2020.

Price was at a gas station when he saw a man assaulting a woman and intervened; the man then assaulted Price. A friend of his later said, “Price had his hands in the air when an officer shot him once in the chest and twice in the back.”

Lucas is white, Price is black. Lucas was acting as a Wolfe City municipal police officer when he shot and killed Price. Wolfe City’s police department consists of a chief, a sergeant, and Lucas. Wolfe is a small town where everyone knows each other.

Lucas, who lives in a town 20 miles away, isn’t well known there and doesn’t know the people there. Lucas has a history of minor traffic offenses. No information is available right now about what police training he received or his education and prior employment.

According to the Price family’s lawyer, “When police arrived, I’m told, he raised his hands and attempted to explain what was going on. Police fired tasers at him and when his body convulsed from the electrical current, they ‘perceived a threat’ and shot him to death.”

Lucas was arrested and charged with murder after a Texas Rangers investigation.
