GOP hoaxer gets caught staging fake FBI raid on himself

If you see the name “Jacob Wohl” on anything, write it off as a hoax. Because it is.

That includes today’s FBI raid on Wohl’s partner in intellectual crimes, Jack Burkman, which was staged by Wohl and Burkman with actors hired through Craigslist posing as FBI agents. The scheme went awry when the “FBI agents” blabbed.

“On Monday, a Virginia man who responded to a Craigslist ad seeking actors to play FBI agents for a television pilot came forward to say that he’d been roped into the latest hoax orchestrated by bumbling right-wing smear merchants Jack Burkman and Jacob Wohl,” Daily Beast reported here.

Of course, the “raid” was intended to garner publicity. Emails were sent to reporters, in which “Burkman was insinuating that high-level government officials were retaliating against him for his efforts to root out corruption in Washington.” The “official” they were targeting apparently was ex-Defense Secretary James Mattis, who has criticized Trump. Daily Beast noted,

“Wohl and Burkman have teamed up on a host of dubious and often easily debunked hoaxes, frequently involving press conferences at Burkman’s Northern Virginia home and lurid sexual allegations against prominent Trump opponents.”

Another purpose of rightwing hoaxes like these is to lure news media to report fake stories to discredit them. The Washington Post bit, but followed up with the FBI, and later published this clarification,

“The FBI’s Washington Field Office on Monday afternoon released a statement saying it had not conducted any law enforcement activity earlier in the day at the home of lobbyist, conspiracy theorist and right-wing operative Jack Burkman, who had claimed that agents raided his house.”

Read that story here. WaPo, as it’s sometimes called, was the target of another fake story in 2017, when James O’Keefe, another notorious rightwing hoaxer, sent a woman to pose as a sexual assault victim of then-Senate candidate Roy Moore, who was defeated in a special election by Democrat Doug Jones, who is up for reelection in 2020 and is expected to lose in heavily-Republican Alabama. Read about that here.

What are we to make of this? Simple: Wohl and Burkman are professional liars. Don’t believe anything they say or do, because it’s fake.
