Beware dangerous hand sanitizers

Hand sanitizer warnings are proliferating.

The Food and Drug Administration has put over 100 of these products on its consumer warning list. Some contain methanol, which “is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and must not be used due to its toxic effects.” (Stories here and here.)

Others don’t contain enough ethyl or isopropol alcohol, the active ingredient, to be effective. (Story here.)

Off-brand sanitizer can even catch fire (story here; graphic photo).

Some consumers advocate making your own (how-to here).
