“An asteroid known as 2018 VP1 is headed straight to Earth” and “could hit on November 2, 2020, according to the Center for Near Earth Objects Studies (CNEOS) at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory,” numerous news sources reported on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2020. Read story here and here.
An evangelist predicted back in June the world will end on Dec. 21, 2020. So far, the discrepancy hasn’t been worked out by mathematical geniuses, but the later date makes more sense, because God probably wants to see who wins the election before intervening.
It’s not clear to me why any evangelist would expect the world to end if Trump wins, or thinks he won’t, because God is on Trump’s side even though he’s a liar, cheat, serial adulterer, and suspected of being an atheist. After all, they’re on Trump’s side.
As a matter of science, though, asteroids hit the Earth all the time, but most just cause a surface dent, not planetary destruction. The impact effects depend on how big it is, how fast it’s going, and where it hits. If it lands in the ocean, it probably would just cause some coastal flooding.
Update (11/10/20): The asteroid was a no-show. We’re still here.
