Essay: We need better police, not no police

I don’t agree with calls to eliminate police, or drastically slash police budgets. We need better police, not no police. Somebody has to direct traffic, cite traffic violators, and arrest drunk drivers; respond to crimes-in-progress, investigate crimes, and arrest criminals; and protect society. Do you really want untrained, unsupervised, and unaccountable vigilantes “keeping the peace”? But I agree there are problems with American policing that must be addressed. Hopefully the coming weeks and months will bring change. The credibility of our police is on the line.
