St. Patty’s Day: Why is the Medal of Honor so IRISH?

“Of the 3,515 Medals of Honor awarded by the United States, some 2,018 have gone to Irish-Americans, according to Patrick McDermot of Irish Veterans Post 2, created in Tampa in 2017.”

Perhaps there are lessons here for today’s immigrant-haters. And yes, America’s highest award for combat valor has been awarded to at least one illegal Mexican immigrant, too. https://www.military.com/daily-news/2019/03/16/why-do-so-many-medals-honor-go-irish-troops-heres-one-theory.html?ESRC=army_190319.nl

Could have something to do with the military being a low skilled labor that paid a wage, and that thousands of Irish joined the army during the civil war and Indian Wars. The Irish made up the bulk of no less than 40 Union Brigades in the civil war (not to mention Confederate Brigades). There were over 140 men from the Irish Brigade that received the Medal of Honor.
