SUNDAY REVELATIONS: Ending Racism

My comments

“Race” is a term with no definition outside of bigotry.

As for as I know, none of the world’s bibles define humans as anything more than one species.  Our ancestors certainly identified by tribe or people but those distinctions were not based on the bizarre idea of distinct human species.  Even  malignant caste systems classified people by ancestry not be some concept like our idea of race.  The idea that humans could be divided by race, or by a “drop of blood”  arose in Spain as a way to distinguish the limited rights of Jews and Muslims who have been forced to convert  from the inherent rights of  “old Christians.”

Later the Church used the same concept to justify use of Africans, black people, as an inferior species.  Robert E Lee summarized this well in am message to the US Congress protesting the freedoms given to slaves after the Civil War, “”The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially & physically. The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is known & ordered by a wise Merciful Providence. Their emancipation will sooner result from the mild & melting influence of Christianity, than the storms & tempests of fiery Controversy.”

As a biologist I can not not define your race anymore that I can define your religion.  What I do know is that we … especially we Americans … use racial terms as a way of demeaning others … whether that is the Tea Party Trumpist referring to an African American as a nigger or the Black Lives Matter activitist insisting on white guilt.

Racism will not end until everyone stops feeding it. Celebrate your ethnicity .. Irish, Jewish, Greek, American, Black, and yes even White .  Celebrate  if that is an identity that gives you pride. But demeaning others because of their skin or their belonging to some physically characterized group is a sin against our common humanity.
