Seattle’s ohso meager tribute to Chief Seattle

From The Seattle Times: Monday, Oct. 10, is Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Seattle, which the city has been celebrating since 2014. Here are a few events happening around the area:

1. United Indians of All Tribes Foundation celebrates Indigenous Peoples’ Day Monday, Oct. 10, with three events. A celebratory march from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Westlake Park, 400 Pine St., invites participants to bring drums. Sherman Alexie is the scheduled keynote speaker at Seattle City Hall’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 600 Fourth Ave. Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center hosts an Evening Celebration with dinner, from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 5011 Bernie Whitebear Way in Discovery Park, Seattle; www.unitedindians.org/?event=indigenous-peoples-day-celebration-3.
2. Seattle’s Duwamish Tribe invites everyone to a free Indigenous Day performance of “Listen to Seattle,” honoring the city’s namesake (Chief Seattle) and the Duwamish Tribe’s continuing struggle for justice with music by the Steve Griggs Ensemble. Jazz musician and Duwamish tribal member James Rasmussen is the featured guest artist, with music and spoken narrative to provide insight and perspective into the conflicts and prejudices that continue to impact Native American cultures today. The event is at 7:30 Monday, Oct. 10, at Town Hall Seattle, 1119 Eighth Ave., Seattle. 3. The City of Bainbridge Island celebrates its first Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, Oct. 10, after passing a resolution last month declaring the annual holiday.
