David Brewster on The $54 Billion Sound Transit Prop 1

Seattle Times runs pro-con op-eds on Sound Transit vote. The opposition case is particularly well made by Chuck Collins; odd that the case in favor comes from a California head of Sierra Club, not a local. Collins makes good points about limited impact on congestion, failure of transit to get people out of cars (as opposed to out of buses), and availability of next-generation solutions. All may be true, but the tough case the opponents have to deal with is the remote likelihood of enacting a better plan, given the veto-rich local politics. All the opponents have a pet scheme; none of the opponents would cohere around an alternative. We’re left with a clumsy bird-in-hand.
