The Russian leader became the first recipient of the Hugo Chavez prize, an award invented by Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro. Mr Maduro announced both the invention of the honour and his decision to bestow it on Vladimir Putin while unveiling a statue in tribute to former Venezuelan leader Chavez. The award also coincided with the awarding of the Nobel peace prize, which was given to neighbouring Colombia’s president Juan Manuel Santos for his role in negotiating a peace agreement with Marxist FARC rebels. Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro. announces that Vladimir Putin is the the first recipient of the HUGO CHAVEZ Award. The award also coincided with the awarding of the Nobel peace prize, which was given to neighbouring Colombia’s president Juan Manuel Santos for his role in negotiating a peace agreement with Marxist FARC rebels.

Masuro: ”I’ve decided to create the Hugo Chavez prize for peace and the sovereignty to Vladimir Putin.

 “I think President Vladimir Putin deserves this Hugo Chavez award,” He went on to describe Putin as a “fighter for peace.”
