I wanted to say, “Susan, we have to rethink our state tax code – with all the demands for education, infrastructure, transit, etc., we can’t keep piling it all on sales and property taxes” – but Susan wasn’t listening. In her pleasant recorded voice, she simply made the same old Republican pitch – “Democrats want to tax us to death, if elected they will pass a state income tax, and the sure way to stop them is to cast your vote for Republican candidates.”
What she didn’t mention, of course, was the fundamental inequity and unfairness of today’s tax system, or the rather more nuanced language in the state Democratic platform – “a progressive tax system at both the federal and state level, including taxing unearned income at the same rate as earned income, a state income tax offset by cuts in regressive taxes, eliminating the Business and Occupation tax in favor of a corporate income tax…..” – an approach (my two cents) that allows us to more adequately and fairly invest in our future.
I know Susan wanted me to react to her focus-grouped message, i.e. Democrats will tax you to death, Republicans will save you.
I just did, and I want more than empty slogans…….
