Is Georgia’s “stand your ground” law for whites only?

Jessie Murray, a black man, is charged in Georgia with murder. On Feb. 15, 2016, Murray met his estranged wife in a bar to discuss their marriage. After a few drinks they drifted to a pool table, where a tipsy white man, an ex-cop named Nathan Adams, stumbled into Mrs. Murray and knocked her down. Words were exchanged. Murray was quickly surrounded by Adams’ friends. He got away and went outside to his car to retrieve a legal gun, for which he had a permit. The white men came outside into the parking lot after Murray, and gang-assaulted him. In the ensuing scuffle, Murray’s gun went off, killing Adams. Jessie-Murray-FeatureOne of the white men also was armed, and fired several shots at Murray, but missed as Murray ran to a nearby tire shop. Murray was arrested; none of the white men were. Now, Murray’s attorneys are seeking dismissal of the charges against him under Georgia’s “stand your ground” law. It remains to be seen whether this law applies to him, or is a “whites only” law.
