A 5-minute primer on vote supression

Politics is a dirty, bare-knuckles business. But of all the dirty rotten things Republicans do, none are nastier than their attempts to keep American citizens from voting in their own country — a right our veterans fought and died for. Of course, they rarely come right out and say “we don’t want Democrats to vote, so we can win more elections,” although occasionally someone catches them saying it. More often, though, they peddle bogus rationalizations; usually couched in the language of “voting fraud,” a problem that’s nearly non-existent in the United States. This massive anti-voting campaign targets minorities, the poor, elderly, students, working people, and urban residents — those more likely to vote Democratic. After a rightwing Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act last year, minority groups and voting rights activists are faced with having to re-fight the 1960s voting rights battles all over again. Nevertheless, it’s a battle we must fight and win. Watch this video.
