Job #1 of the Legislature is a political hippocratic oath to do no harm.

The state’s 2016 supplemental budget fails to meet that low standard. Not only did we fearlessly punt this year on McCleary, we’ve unnecessarily placed our state’s school districts in danger of losing nearly half a billion by failing to simply allow them to protect their own local levy money. That is structural harm and it’s irresponsible of the Senate majority. Due to this failure, Seattle Public School District continues to be in very real danger of losing $38 million if the Legislature doesn’t resolve the expiration date of the levy authorization.

I am deeply disappointed that the legislature has not laid the proper financial and policy groundwork for a bold approach to McCleary in the 2017 session in this supplemental budget. Onward!
