Chinazor:The Personal Politics of a Boycott

“He advised me to produce my own shit and sooner or later Hollywood would take notice. I agree. I’ve been doing my shit ever since.”

Its no secret that Janet Hubbard and Will Smith had a little tiff on the set of Fresh Prince. And apparently she hasn’t gotten over it. There is a tradition in Hollywood, when you piss off a star of the show, he or she can see that you never work in that town again. So Ms. Hubbard hasn’t had a great gig since she got tossed from Fresh Prince. However, I understand where she is coming from in condemning Jada Smith’s planned boycott of the Oscars. I equally support Jada’s boycott but I would have whispered to her not to broadcast it. It would have been more effective if done surreptitiously.

I had my first and only experience in Hollywood in 1990. I heard through Right On Magazine that Michael Jackson was looking for a story for his song – remember the time. I always knew MJ was a closeted Afrocentrist, which wasn’t well known at the time. I wrote a script featuring MJ as a traveler back in time who met a king of Egypt who suffered insomnia. And MJ was able to tell him a story of his travels in a song, and the king fell asleep for the first time in years. He made MJ his official griot in his court. I received a letter from Bob Jones, his manager at the time thanking me for the story. A year later I saw the video of MJ performing for the queen of Egypt. I could have sworn it was similar to my story. I called Bob Jones and he actually returned my call and he told me the best thing I live by today. He said there was no such thing as plagiarism of ideas in Hollywood. He advised me to produce my own shit and sooner or later Hollywood would take notice. I agree. I’ve been doing my shit ever since.
