Anthony Washington:Erasing History

Anthony Washingtonwith warpAnthony Washington
There was a day where I was helping a young Ethiopian kid with his world history. He was studying about Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, who annexed Ethiopia in 1936. That’s history, and I did not have an issue with that, but what I did find interesting is the book made no mention of Hailie Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930-1974. No mention of him being exiled from the country from 1936-1941, and what was worse, there was no mention of him returning to power. Not even a paragraph about how the British helped him. Later, in the class, the young man had a oral report to do, and he picked Hailie Selassie. The pride he took in that project made me proud as we researched and collected information about Selassie. I was very upset, that his teacher was not even going to mention a shining moment in the history of this kids place of origin. Yet spent time to speak about a man, that used chemical weapons on Ethiopia. That was very powerful for me, as it gave me a very vivid picture of how public schools perpetuate a racist Eurocentric view of history.

    Are you being racist?

    Is “Eurocentrism” about race?

For that matters, Ethiopia is a smeitic country, so is this antisemitism?

Would a similar story about Egypt that left put King Farouk be racist?

    yesh ..

We have a huge problem in America and Europe with understanding the World’s story as oppose to t Our story.

I think you are being PC .. or maybe even racist yourself!

But, I fail to see this as racist. Do you think the book would have ANY HISory of Persia or the Ukraine? How about Korea or tht Olmec?

Then there is the WYF issue of what is race? Ethiopians are genetically semites. So, with apologies ofr a sharp edged pun, are ou calling the teacher an antisemite?
