How Florida’s ex-felons can get their voting rights back

By hoping voters elect a Democratic governor, that’s how. In the chart below, red bars represent Democratic governors, and gray bars represent Republican governors. Of course, this whole issue is racially charged because of how Florida’s criminal justice system is skewed against blacks, and because Florida Republicans don’t want blacks to vote. About 20% of Florida’s black population is barred from voting by that state’s permanent disqualification of ex-felons from the franchise — one of only three states with such a law, and a law deeply rooted in Jim Crow discrimination.
