Sawant (Finally) Shows Up for a District 3 Meeting

I’m going to step out on a limb here, because I’ve got friends who are supporting Kshama Sawant for the District 3 Council position. Last night at the EastPAC (East Precinct Advisory Council) meeting, several neighbors expressed concern and frustration about the ongoing issues in the now vacant post office lot at 23rd and Union. (Sawant finally showed up to this meeting after being invited for several months.) One of the neighbors reported this account on Next Door: “Sawant did not respond till everyone had spoken, and was sympathetic to our concerns, but was too unfamiliar with the issue to feel comfortable commenting directly on it. She did speak about a broadening income gap, etc.”

How can a sitting Council person who relatively recently moved into District 3 NOT KNOW ABOUT what’s been going on at 23RD AND UNION??? This is precisely my concern about Sawant. I have not ever known her to be concerned or involved in issues relevant to our neighborhoods in District 3.

I really wished she’d run for citywide- or better yet, a state legislative position, where her initiatives can be applied to a broad constituency and we can have representation that is on the ground standing for our specific needs.
