Paul Ryan’s family-leave hypocrisy

paul-ryanRep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) apparently will be the next House Speaker, succeeding Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) who threw in the towel after trying in vain to control his unruly Tea Party caucus, whose 40 or so members believe they alone have the right to run the country and to hell with the 90%-plus of American voters who didn’t elect them.

Ryan, to his credit, vowed he wouldn’t make concessions to the Tea Partiers to get the job. But he demanded one of his own: He insisted on forgoing some of the Speaker’s traditional duties to spend time with his family. His colleagues went along. This has led the gullible media to cast Ryan as a “champion of work/life balance.”

But Ryan has consistently opposed and voted against family leave for America’s workers. He apparently thinks that’s a perk reserved for those occupying positions of power and privilege.
